Meet Leander

End Of Life Doula

"How can I prepare for Death?

Learn how to live.

How can I learn how to live?

By preparing for Death."

Reading those words changed my life.

I was in my early thirties working one of many obscure jobs to support my Family. This particular job involved spending long hours cooped up in a tower with a video camera. The work was as follows:  Point your camera at the horses if they are going around the track and find something else to do when they aren't.

Well they "weren't" for about fifty minutes every hour so some people in this line of work used the time to study (there were no smart phones back then!), some used it to sleep and some wrote philosophical anecdotes on the walls.

I myself spent many hours and days pondering the quandary of those four lines in my "down" time whilst doing that job, that is how I "spent" my time.

I don't know who wrote the above wisdom but I have since adopted it as a guiding principle in my life and it remains the foundation of my work as an End of life Doula.

Advance Care Directive

  • You don't have to be dying to benefit from talking to an End of Life Doula. I can help with paperwork too.

Education and Advocacy

  • Doulas educate families about the dying process, demystifying it and empowering them to make informed decisions.

  • They advocate for the individual’s wishes, ensuring that their preferences are respected by medical professionals and caregivers.

Practical Guidance

  • Death doulas assist with practical matters related to end-of-life planning. This includes helping individuals create advance directives, choose hospice care, and make funeral arrangements.

  • They can guide families through paperwork, legal processes, and logistical details, reducing stress during a challenging time.

Continuity of Care

  • Unlike medical professionals who focus on curing, death doulas provide ongoing support until the end of life.

  • They bridge the gap between medical care and emotional well-being, ensuring a holistic approach.

Emotional Support

  • Death doulas offer compassionate companionship and active listening. They help individuals express their feelings, fears, and hopes about death.

  • They create a safe space for open conversations, allowing people to explore their emotions and find peace.

Legacy Work

  • Death doulas encourage individuals to reflect on their life, values, and legacy. They facilitate conversations about what matters most to the person.

  • Legacy work may involve writing letters, recording memories, or creating meaningful rituals.
